A Shot Rang
the song on the radio…
was fun and cheerful. She sang as the car leisurely flew along the road. The car in front was only a few meters away. Her voice lilted to every pitch and note like a canary, her smile wide and carefree. The yellow stripes flew by her tires over and over. Down one street, turn left, down another, turn right. Over and over again for a long time. The car was still in front of her. Finally, the car in front pulled to a stop. She pulled over a few feet away. She continued to hum as she grabbed something in the darkness, and stepped out onto the street. Her bare feet were silent against the damp road as she made her languid way toward the driver’s window. The radio song between her lips was the only noise other than the natural susurrus of the forest surrounding the road. She knocked on the window and smiled. As the barricade slowly lowered between them, the man’s face came slowly into view. Fear and shock registered upon his face. She smiled.
The humming stopped.
And a shot rang out in the darkness.
